The Staywell Aluminium model offers 2 setting options: the flap opens inward and outward, or it is fully locked. If you want to prevent your pet from leaving the house for a period of time, or conversely, keep it outside, you can fully close the opening at any time using the sliding panel. Importantly, the flap does not swing back and forth but stops flush with the frame, and a built-in magnet holds it securely in place. This closing system prevents excess outside air from entering the home. Additionally, the edges of the flap are lined with a soft strip that provides extra protection against drafts and also reduces noise during operation. How to teach your pet to use the pet door?
After installing the door, leave the flap open for a while (you can secure it with a piece of string and tape to the surface above. Make sure the flap does not fall down accidentally, as this could frighten your pet). Encourage your pet to walk through the opening using their favourite food or treats. First, feed your pet by the door on the inside, then by the door on the outside. Practise until your pet walks through the opening without hesitation. Then repeat the training with the flap lowered so your pet learns to push the door open. Pet and reward your animal every time it passes through the door. You can also incorporate play into the training, for example by throwing a ball for your dog through the opening or passing a cat teaser wand through it.
