Description
Groom Professional Thornit is a specialized powder for ears, skin, and anus of dogs, cats, and rabbits. It treats and prevents infections, soothing and eliminating irritation inside the ears as well as unpleasant ear odours. It provides relief during ear inflammation and can also be used on other parts of the body.
Ears
Superficial inflammation of the middle ear is often caused by mites that dogs pick up from grass and which are frequently transmitted indirectly from foxes. The most common symptom is the presence of brownish, waxy scabs inside the ears. These are caused by mites that feed in the dark. The scabs may be dry or slightly weeping, which can cause a noticeable smell. Another type is more aggressive and foul-smelling, resembling a decaying, festering wound. In both cases, symptoms include scratching, shaking the head, rubbing the ears against the floor and general irritability. Constant scratching can lead to bloody abrasions, inflammation and blood clots. Standard treatments involving drops or antibiotics often only provide temporary relief. Thornit contains no antibiotics, making it absolutely safe to use. Iodoform (iodomethane) was used in early dentistry.
Australian veterinarians have identified mites from the Acari group that cause significant distress and exhaustion in pets by leading them to constantly scratch and bite all parts of their bodies. Vets suggest that these tiny, highly mobile insects feed on dander. Shampooing is ineffective. The recommended treatment is Thornit powder. If the animal has long hair, part its coat with a comb and sprinkle the powder directly onto the exposed skin.
Directions for use:
Any excess moisture can be gently removed with a cotton bud. DO NOT REMOVE THE WAX. Under normal circumstances, the powder SHOULD NOT be applied deep into the ear canal, as the brown wax acts as a plug. Hold the animal in a comfortable position (lying on its side). This may be difficult for cats and might require assistance. Calm the animal by petting it and apply a pinch of powder using the tip of a spoon. Sprinkle a small amount of the powder around the inner ear (the area surrounding the ear canal), taking care not to pour it directly into the hole. Gently massage the area with your fingers. Apply Thornit twice a day. The first dose should provide relief, but treatment should continue for 1–5 days (usually 3 days). Stop the treatment when the brown wax starts to move outwards or 'flow' out. This means that the mites have been killed and will be expelled along with the wax and powder, leaving the ear clean. To protect the animal from reinfection, apply a pinch of Thornit to each ear once a week. For long-eared breeds, it is advisable to dip the ear tips in Thornit once a week.
Anus
If the animal drags its rear end along the floor and it is not an issue with its anal glands, mites may have settled under its tail. Treatment: apply a thin layer of mild cream to your finger or glove, then dip it into the powder. Apply it specifically to the necessary area under the tail.
Paws
Mites can also get between the claws, causing the pet to lick its paws constantly at first, before becoming distressed and tired and eventually pulling out its fur and biting itself. Treatment: place a plastic bag containing a small amount of Thornit powder over the paw. Sprinkle the powder between the claws, on the pads and slightly above the paws on the legs. Important: For all applications, use only a very small amount of Thornit. Exercise caution, as iodoform may stain light carpets or other fabrics.
