Dog toys can be divided into several categories depending on their purpose and the way they are used:

• Chew toys: chew toys are designed for dogs to bite and gnaw. Dog chew toys help maintain healthy teeth and gums, prevent boredom and stress, and satisfy the natural need to chew. Chew toys can be made of rubber, plastic, or natural materials such as horns or bones. They also come in various textures and shapes, such as snowmen, bones, sticks, rings, or dumbbells.

• Tug toys: these toys are designed for pulling and tugging by the dog alone or together with the owner. Tug toys for dogs help develop a dog’s strength and agility, strengthen the bond with the owner, and support obedience training. Dog tug toys may be made of rope, fabric, or rubber. They come in different forms, such as fur on a string, knotted ropes, or plush dog tugs.

• Fetch toys: these toys are designed for retrieving. Fetch toys for dogs help improve the dog’s fitness and coordination, stimulate intelligence, and teach cooperation and responsiveness. Fetch toys can be made of plastic, foam, rubber, or fabric. They come in various shapes, such as frisbees, bouncing balls, rubber sticks, floating foam boomerangs, or pullers.

• Interactive dog toys: these toys stimulate the dog’s mind and sense of smell and help teach new skills. Interactive toys prevent boredom and certain behavioural problems, encourage curiosity and problem-solving, and reward the dog for completing tasks. They may be made of plastic, wood, or metal. They offer various mechanisms and difficulty levels, such as treat compartments, rotating components, or sliding drawers.

• Treat-dispensing toys: these accessories are designed for hiding or serving treats. Treat, snack toys prolong mealtime, prevent overeating, and stimulate the dog’s senses and intelligence. They may be made of rubber, plastic, or fabric.

When selecting a dog toy, it is important to consider several key factors:

• Size: a dog toy should be appropriate for your dog’s size and strength. A toy that is too small may be swallowed or pose a choking hazard. A toy that is too large may be difficult for the dog to grip or could even injure the animal.
• Material: a dog toy should be made from a safe and durable material. Ideally, it should resist chewing and tugging and be easy to clean and disinfect. Avoid toys made from breakable, sharp, or toxic materials such as glass, metal, or BPA-containing plastics.
• Functionality: the toy should be engaging for your dog—whether due to sounds, lights, movement, treat-dispensing features, or a variety of shapes, colours, and textures.
• Safety: a dog toy must be safe for both the dog and the owner. Safety means: no small parts that can easily detach or be swallowed, no risk of choking or the toy getting stuck, no risk of injury or allergic reactions.

For cats, the best toys are those they can hunt. Following their natural predatory cycle - stalking, creeping, ambushing and “dissecting the prey” - the right toys help your cat release excess energy and satisfy essential behavioural needs.

Furry or feathered balls, wands with small soft toys at the end, cat lasers, moving electronic mice or kickers filled with catnip are all excellent choices that guarantee great feline entertainment. Add a tunnel for sneaking through, a scratching post, and a willing human playmate - and you have the perfect recipe for a happy, fulfilled cat.
